The Darkness

Ill be making a review about The Darkness, the
comic book series
was created by Marc Silvestri, Garth Ennis, and David Wohl.
Story line:
Your Jackie Estacado, once a hitman for the Mafia. On the eve of your 21st birthday, your uncle Pauly (The New York Mafia leader) wants you killed, however, a hidden power inside you wakes up, called the Darkness and saves you. The Darkness is an ancient power that has been in your family for many generations, that appear to be two snake-like demons on either side of Jackie. Although they have no names (at least I never caught it during the game) I call them Righty and Lefty. Jackie survives many assassination attempts, and track down his uncle Pauly, however, not before Pauly and a corrupt police officer (Eddie Shrote) kill his girl friend (Jenny).
This is the beginning of the strong story line The Darkness has to offer.
Gameplay:
The controls in The Darkness are pretty solid. But sometimes you fumble with the D-pad to switch to the weapon that you want/need, and with the many different types of guns, this can be a real pain. At first, gun fights may seem fun and enjoyable, especially when you first enter a new area. However, after a while some fights seem lacking and repetitive. After you clear an area full of people, they wont respawn next time you reenter, unless they had something to do with a mission. To top it off, Jackie's pace is somewhere between a walk and a jog, making it that much more straining to go and look for people to hunt down, making it seem like New York, "The City That Never Sleeps", seem like a ghost town.
You mostly travel by subway. At first riding the subway is confuseing since you have to read signs to make sure your riding the right train, but you get the hang of it. But it seems that as soon as you get used to it, its already become repetative and tedious.
Apart from having many weapons at your disposal, you have another: The Darkness. Durring gun fights The Darkness is your best weapon. It is readily available from the begging of the game, with other powers unlocked later. It acts like a shield, which turns the tide in most gun fights. Apart from being a shield, The Darkness has other powers, that range from a tentacle that reaches out and stabs people, to spawning black holes at will. The Darkness power works off an interesting mechanic, (you guessed it) darkness. If you stand in light for too long, the Darkness' powers drain, and will leave, leaving you with only your guns, and defenceless to bullets. Durring parts of the game shooting out lights starts to get repetitive, but luckily auto-aim is there to help you line up your shot. This can start to get annoying as it can ruin the element of surprise, as you almost need to shoot out all the lights in a room before entering a room. As you play you gain new powers by eating the hearts of others. One of the powers, a tentacle like part that extends from Jackie, can either impail his targets, or be used to effortlessly take out lights. Even more powerful powers become available towards the end of the game. One, the black hole, almost seems to ruin the challenge. When standing in the dark, this can practically be spammed with no consequence, which is why it seems appropriate that something so powerful is given to you towards the end of the game. Later, you obtain two new guns that are fairly powerfull, and have endless ammo, as long as your Darkness powers are active, and standing in the dark.
Another addition to your power is the ability to summon darklings (foulmouthed imp-link creatures) to do your bidding. These are a nice addition to the game, however they always seem one step from perfect. Sometimes they line their targets up through walls and start shooting directly into it, hitting nothing. Towards the end of the game, you have the ability to summon four of them at once. Even though they don't always hit their target, they make a nice army, and can always be used as a distraction or live shield. Eventually you may get caught up in the moment and start to feel like a badass trucking through the streets of New York with the power of Darkness at your disposal and a small army of imps in your wake ready to do your biding.
Graphics:
When released The Darkness graphics were one of the best for the 360. Being a gam that uses light and dark to judge your power, lighting effects were well done. Character models were nice, but nothing that really sets the bar. The environments, or streets of New York is great. Things like benches, buildings, and even the streets all look realistic. Dispite the lack people roaming arround, there is an abundance of trash on the floor, allyways to explore, fire excapes to climb, and other fun things to notice and do while trucking through New York.
Score:
Story: 9.0
Gameplay: 9.3
Graphics: 9.1
Over all: 9.1
Not perfect, but hey what game is? Over all this game is great, dispite things that could have been better/better thought out. But the game's few faults are nothing that could ruin such a great game. If you own an Xbox 360, and looking for a game to rent, you need to submit your self to "The Darkness"
