Compaq Presario Desktop problem
«
on:

My Compaq Presario computer is freezing. I believe that the cause of this is the temperature of my computer. It is in a room that is not air-conditioned, and this did not start occurring until the weather got warmer. I don't feel that this is problems with CPU usuage or memory, as I don't have a lot of items stored on my computer. This happens at random periods of the day. It could not happen for 2 days, then happen every ten minutes. My screen just basically freezes, (ctrl+alt+del) doesn't function, and mouse doesn't move, either.

This could be tricky, since It could be many differnt things.
Try downloading the program "PC Wizard" it can tell you the temperature of your CPU and video card and let us know what they are.
You may also try dusting out your CPU fan as it might be clogged up with dust.
Download here:

P.S Welcome to xTech! I've also moved your thread out of the Announcements section to the General Support section.

What processer do you currently have? If you don't know click on start, then run and type in dxdiag, or It should also say in PC Wizard.
Was your comptuer ideling when those temps were taken? or where you just blaming a game or any intensive program? How long has the computer been on for? 65.5 C is pretty high for a CPU.

My Processor is AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2800+, MMX, 3DNow, ~2.1GHz. I was currently online while taking these temps, the computer was on probably for about 2 hours at the time, and I wasn't playing a game or oother program that could contribute.

I would say that's a high temp, although it might not be the cause of your problem. Try throughly cleaning out the CPU and any case fans, and if there are any power cables or IDE cables or anything blocking air passage try and push them all back and maybe zip tie them. Then see if your CPI temp decreases at all.

Open up the case, and leave it open for a while; stick a fan on it if you have one. As long as you don't have animals prowling around, it shouldn't be dangerous. If it stops freezing, then you can assume that it is the temperature.

If it's never done it before in the warmer months, then its probably bad airflow somehow or clogged fans(or filters if you have any). You can also try reappliing thermal paste to the heatsink..
Buying a better heatsink and fan would help a lot, but if it never did it before you should be able to lower it without buying one. If the computers newer and you haven't used it when its been this warm before maybe they just included a bad heatsink/fan for the CPU.

Hey, I have not posted in this topic for a very long time, but their are really bad problems with this computer, and by the way, it is a Compaq Presario S3600NX desktop. Recently, I dusted out the entire computer with a vacuum to remove all the dust in the CPU fan and everywhere else. However, it is still freezing sometimes. I also noticed that their is an extra plug inside of the computer, is this possibly to put another heat sink in? I don't know whether to replace the whole thing, or just buy another one to put inside. I am thinking that this will probably do the trick.

if you want a decently cheap PC, I'm selling a PEntium D 805 system for a couple of bucks...
outside of that, if you are looking for a heatsink, take a picture of the inside of your computer and post it here via photobucket or some other form of host and I can pick one out for you.
