Toshiba Satellite 1415 Laptop
« on: July 26, 2008, 05:45:12 PM »
Hi, I was just wondering how I would be able to hook up my laptop to my television. I have problems with the screen and it is too expensive to fix, so I just decided that I would use it with my TV. Instead of an S-Video jack in my laptop, I have the primitive yellow video jack instead. I tried to use a standard video cable in my TV, but I couldn't get a picture. Also, my TV is fairly old as well, and it only has the jacks for a standard video cable, (yellow, red, and white). I believe I have to change the settings, but I really don't know how to. Thank you for your help.  :)

a Standard definition TV is 640x480 which is probably why the TV isn't working with it, because the laptop is set to a higher resolution then that.

You said you're having problems with the current screen, can you see with it at all? Try changing the resolution to as low as possible and then plugging the TV in.

There should be a function key to switch to an external display on the laptop.  Look on the F keys, you should see two rectangles in the colour of your Fn key.

I changed the resolution to 640x480, but for some reason my television still isn't responding to the laptop. Like I said before, my laptop has a yellow video jack, so I just used a standard video cable to link them, video to video. In properties, I went into the advanced setting and changed the resolution, but it also asked me about the hertz and the color, which could also be a factor to why it is not working, but I am really not sure.

60hz should be fine for a TV, and and probably higher, but leave it at 60mhz for now to be safe.

Look for the Fn key that BoBo was talking about and see if that works.

I just set my laptop to 640x480 with 60hz, but still nothing. Also, I pressed the Fn button with F5 as well. I am starting to think that I am using the wrong cable, because I said the video jack was yellow, but it actually looks to be orange. All of the settings are in place, however.

yup, orange is coax audio. a little different than composite video.
